How does your creativity come to you? Does it hit you between the eyes in a startling fashion, out of nowhere? Does it sneak up on you in little baby steps? Can you invoke creativity at will?
First, remember that you are an inherent, constant and consistent creative being. We are always problem solving. That process is the root of your personal genius.
You can invoke this super power at will. It may come quickly or slowly, depending on the situation, but it will come. This cover of this issue is a great example of that.
I was hanging out with my parents and I had an idea … kind of. I thought it would be funny if they came across something while they were walking their dogs, but I had no idea what. Instead of waiting for the full image to form in my head I started with the basic elements and the center of the image.
I crouched down on the ground with my camera and directed my parents to “emote like you’re looking at something weird.”
Dad: “What are we looking at?”
Me: “Hmm, I don’t know yet.”
Mom: “Am I supposed to be scared or shocked?”
Me: “I’m not sure, try both.”
Once I had the initial batch of images for the scene I set my brain to work in the background. Over the next few weeks different bits began to form. The interesting thing is that the ideas built upon each other.
Sometimes your creative juices don’t flow as quickly as you’d like, but they will given time. All that you need is confidence in your problem solving abilities and patience for everything to come together and connect.
There’s a lot to unpack with this composite image and I’ve run out of space. If you’d like to learn the details about this piece and a fun writing contest, check out the rest of the story online. jb
